USW Local 550’s first Veterans of Steel Meeting with Speakers, Resources, and Special Guests.

Published by Alisha Fleming on

All USW Veterans and all DOE employees from Mid-America, Four Rivers, and Swift & Staley Veterans were invited to the inaugural Veterans of Steel Meeting on April 5th 2023 at the Local 550 Union Hall by our Veterans of Steel Coordinator Steve Wynn. Some of those in attendance were representatives from the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and musician Sal Gonzalez from the Wounded Warrior Project.

Ed Napper of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, spoke to those in attendance on the importance of utilizing resources that are available for all Veterans including schooling and benefits. The speaker representing the Disabled American Veterans, Robert Worden, then addressed the group, sharing his sentiments with the VFW regarding the availability of resources readily available.

To wrap up the meeting, Sal Gonzalez from the Wounded Warrior Project spoke, sharing his own experience being a wounded combat veteran and how the WWP offered him help in his time of need. Sal would then end the evening performing an emotional song he’d wrote about his experience while serving.

The Local 550 would like to extend their sincerest thanks to both the guest speakers and the USW/DOE Veterans who attended, and we look forward to our next meeting, which will be announced in the future.
